Satay or satai is a food made from meat which is cut into small pieces and stabbed in such a way with a bone stick from coconut or bamboo leaves, after which it is grilled using charcoal coals. Satay is served with a variety of spices related to variations of the satay recipe. Meat that is used as satay includes chicken, goat, lamb, beef, pork, rabbit, horse, and others.
Sate is known to originate from Java, Indonesia, and can be found anywhere in Indonesia and has been recognized as one of Indonesia’s national dishes. Satay is also popular in other Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand. Sate is also popular in the Netherlands because it is tempted by Indonesian food, which was once its colony.
Sate is a very popular dish in Indonesia, with various ethnic groups and traditions of cooking (see Indonesian cuisine) have produced various types of satay. In Indonesia, satay can be obtained from traveling satay traders, street vendors at roadside stalls, to upscale restaurants, and is often served at formal and non-formal parties. Recipes and methods for making satay vary depending on the variations and recipes for each region. Almost any type of meat can be made satay. As the country of origin of satay, Indonesia has many variations of satay recipes.
Usually satay is given a sauce, which can be in the form of soy sauce, peanut sauce, or something else, usually accompanied by pickles made from sliced shallots, cucumbers and bird’s eye chilies. Satay is eaten with warm rice or can also be served with lontong or rhombus or just satay.
Other international dishes such as sate are yakitori from Japan, shish kebab from Turkey, shashlik from Caucasians, chuanr from China, and sosatie from South Africa. Sate is listed as ranked 14th in the World’s 50 most delicious foods (50 Most Delicious Dishes in the World) through a reader poll conducted by CNN Go in 2011.

Madura satay
Sate Madura is the satay that is most widely known by Indonesians and favored by many foreign tourists. This satay is usually made from chicken or mutton which is seasoned with soy sauce while being grilled, after which it is smeared with peanut sauce as a sauce. Generally, goat satay is served with sliced shallots, chilies, soy sauce and rice cake. The price of one portion of Madura satay varies, from Rp. 15,000-24,000 only.
Sate Taichan
Taichan satay is a satay that has recently gone viral and is popular among young people. Taichan satay is made from chicken meat that is processed by burning and frying without seasoning, either soy sauce or peanuts. Taichan satay served with salt/seasoning, chili sauce, and lime juice. In general, Taichan satay is also a combination of meat and chicken skin. The price of a portion of taichan satay varies in each region, but usually to enjoy 1 portion of satay we have to pay Rp. 25,000.
Sate Maranggi
Sate Maranggi is satay originating from Purwakarta, West Java. What distinguishes this satay from other satay is that before it is grilled, the meat will first be marinated in a marinade consisting of spices, vinegar and sweet soy sauce. Because it has been soaked in spices, this satay is served without the use of sauce. In 2012, Maranggi satay was designated as one of 30 Indonesian traditional culinary icons by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. The price for 1 portion of Maranggi satay varies from Rp. 28,000-50,000.
Sate Padang
As the name suggests, this satay originates from Padang, West Sumatra. What distinguishes this satay from other satay in general is the processing that does not use soy sauce. Sate Padang is served with Padang seasoning which is a mixture of rice flour, turmeric, peanuts, coriander and other spices. Usually, satay padang is made from beef, tongue, kikil, and other parts of the cow’s body. Sate Padang can be eaten with rice cake or rhombus and skin crackers. The price for 1 portion of Padang satay starts from Rp. 25,000-40,000.
